Chapter 8

Alicia thought her plan might be partially successful in that she could get two or three enemy ships to follow her. When five of them started chasing, she wondered how she became so popular. Two Tol’An ships and three scavenger vessels pursued her toward the debris field, each one firing erratically while buzzing behind her like insane bees.

“Are you luring them into the field?” Dennis asked. “Alicia, that’s insane!”

“So are they,” Alicia said. “So I’ll be in good company . . . for so long as it takes them to crash and burn.”

“Have you thought about the possibility that you might crash and burn?”

“Nah, never have considered that as a likely event.” Alicia stretched her neck before tilting her head in focus. “If you don’t mind, sir, I really need to concentrate for the next few moments so . . . I’ll talk to you when I get out on the other side. Quinn out for now.” She switched off the com just seconds before entering the boneyard.

One thing about space felt unnatural to Alicia and that involved light. Dropping into a canyon, pulling off wild maneuvers back on Earth for the aerial show, meant plunging into shadow. But things were either visible or not in her new environment and had it not been for her HUD highlighting the debris, it would’ve blended in completely.

The space station cast a massive shadow over the trashed vessels and rocks, making it feel like flying beneath a black blanket. Her pursuers didn’t slow down and their weapons provided the only light in the area. Each time they fired, damaged chunks of metal faded into view momentarily.

Alicia dropped one of her missiles and increased speed, detonating it a few moments later. The explosion stirred up the bits of rock, scattering them into a web. The enemy pilots plunged through them, their shields handling the majority of the damage but the last one collided with a detached bulkhead.

The resulting explosion from his vessel stirred up half the boneyard in that sector, sending the pieces in every direction. Several would hit the station, others would be cast off into deep space to burn up on some planet light years away. It had no impact on Alicia just yet but she had a long way to go.

The first few kilometers were fairly easy. She veered casually around the worst of it and let the shields burn up smaller chunks. The deeper she went, the worse it became until she was in a constant state of motion, dropping below a large rock, veering left to avoid a ship module then spinning around a cluster of old ordnance.

Something whacked her hard enough to make the ship drop a good ten feet and she had to compensate, nursing the thrusters for increased control. Her pursuers struggled. Another one slammed into something and his blip disappeared from her scanner. Another one tried to climb, to depart the hazard but was crushed between two rocks.

Two remained and Alicia had no idea how they survived other than sheer luck.
